Successful Free Cataract Surgical Camp in Taplejung Conducted by Mechi Eye Hospital and Matrika Eye Centre

Taplejung Free Surgical Eye Camp

In a collaborative effort between Mechi Eye Hospital, Birtamode, and Matrika Eye Centre, Kathmandu, a two-day free cataract surgical camp was organized in Fungling, Taplejung on Chaitra 20 and 21. The camp aimed to provide essential eye care services to the underserved population of the region. A total of 616 patients were attended to in the outpatient department, with 48 cataract surgeries performed along with other procedures including pterygium excision (6), entropion correction (2), and evisceration (1).

The camp was overseen by Dr. Purushttam Joshi, Medical Director of Mechi Eye Hospital, and Mr. Jal Kumar Gurung, Chairman of Mechi Eye Hospital Sangh. Dr. Kishoreraj Pradhan from Matrika Eye Centre, Kathmandu, also lent his expertise to the camp. Additionally, Craig Engelfried and Kathy Nield from the London Vision Clinic were present to observe the proceedings, highlighting the international collaboration and support for this noble cause.

The successful execution of this camp underscores the commitment of both institutions to providing accessible eye care services to marginalized communities, furthering the goal of eliminating preventable blindness and visual impairment.
